najab sequence

textile space specific installation

Tashkeel UAE 2012

Being adorned is a passive state but used here to express a philosophical concept. The objects are carriers and in preserving the najab’s physicality they are transposed into totemic urban sculptures. Clothing becmes a vehicle of identity at a theoretical level. As it covers and protects it is a a symbol of existence. Worn, the nagab affects the viewer’s position of the wearer and thus the wearer’s view of us. The nagab, removed from its wearer, underlines the highly politicized nature of clothing and identity Removing this face cover from its fixed cultural positioning, allows the viewer to experience the wearer present in her absence. One is free to enter the spatial pauses between the objects. I deconstruct the constructs of an inherited culture and in deconstruction, assertions of unified, free group identity retaining, in their honest simplicity, a relevant validity.
